About Image Sharpness

It's all about bandwidth, which is the cost of doing business on the Internet. The reason that some pages may seem to be "fuzzy" is because they have been compressed in order to speed load time. The intent is to give you, the viewer an initial impression of the page in order to determine if you would like to see more. If you are viewing a page and would like more detail, then click once again on the image itself. This will load a higher resolution (i.e. - less compressed) version of the page. This website was designed for a home user who has a 28.8 kbps dial-up connection to the internet. What this means is that every initial page view has been designed to load in 30 seconds or less. It does neither you or us any good if you're sitting at home, getting annoyed, wondering and waiting for the website to load.  The page you're looking at right now should've loaded in about 5-6 seconds, which is very fast. However it contains very few graphics, which are comparatively large and so load more slowly. The enhanced images will take about a minute or so to load, and the print ready versions about the same.

Now, if your connection is faster than 28.8 then great! But remember that the Internet is contention based, this means that other factors also influence site load time.  For example, how many people are signed on through your local ISP? So just because we tell you how we've optimized this website, it's not a guarantee of performance, but rather an indicator of our effort.

Is the size of the text too small?

Do you have a wheel mouse? Try this remedy. Find the "ctrl" key on your keyboard (on the bottom, lower left and lower right), press and hold down the "ctrl" key while dialing your mouse wheel either up or down. Voila! You can see the text size enlarge or decrease right before your eyes. Go ahead and give it a try. No wheel mouse? Not to worry, you can still adjust your text size though not as simply. Select "View" from your browsers menu bar at the top, and then select "Text Size" from the drop down list. Choose the size you wish (this example assumes you have Internet Explorer installed).

In this online catalog you will find three types of images.

initial page view = highly compressed, designed to give an overall impression of the pages contents but with noticeable loss of detail. Should load in 30 seconds or less over a 28.8 kbps dial-up connection.

enhanced view = medium compression, designed to provide all viewable detail, including line drawings and formulae, though colorization and sharpness may be affected. Approx load time 1 minute.

printable image = low compression, highest quality image suitable for print out. Sized to fit on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper with it's native aspect ratio maintained. Load times average 2 minutes.
